Traditional Pu’er tea is normally compressed and shaped like pancakes. This practice dates back to the thirteenth year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign (1735 AD) in Qing Dynasty. Each piece of pancake-shaped Pu’er tea weighs 7 liang, or 357 grams. A typical tea bundle usually consists of 7 pieces of Pu’er tea, and each bundle’s weight is 49 liang, or 2499 grams. Historically, Pu’er tea was sold to Tibet and areas where overseas Chinese reside. During the 1960s, Pu’er Tea packed in this way was renamed “the Yunnan Cake Tea of Seven Pieces”
